There was an era that considered the customer to be kings. Customers ruled the market and discounts emerged from their existence (putting it crudely). But then, something happened – metamorphoses in the advertising world. Copywriting blossomed in its fullest glory. The likes of David Ogilvy, Neil French, Prasoon Joshi, Piyush Pandey, happened to this blessed industry. Advertising took a completely new avatar.
Sowing the seed of Copywriting
To many inspired yet confused writers, Copywriting was often mistaken as slogan writing. To define copywriting to a layman, it is the art of crafting words for the purpose to promote a product or a service. In short, copywriting is related to advertising directly.
Enter Internet Era.
There was a profusion of websites. Online activities saw an exponential rise and content marketing services needed online content writing. That was when this category surfaced in the 90s. It was the 90s kid of copywriting (to put in gently). Slowly and steadily, it started to gain more ground when people started searching for information online and websites (read, companies) felt the need to be unique.
Content writing was no longer a lovechild of copywriting. It earned its own place in advertising through “Content Creation” rather than just “Content Writing”.
That’s when Netflix happened to us.
So, you need to keep the audience engaged. You don’t just write scripts for movies or ad commercials anymore. You become a Content Creator. It emerged as a whole new category. IPL happened to India quite soon enough. But, that was again a huge content creator in itself. So, you get the drift where this is going, right?
Content Became The New King
Even Jon Snow didn’t know this could happen. But, you see how pop culture contributed so that we could bring Game of Thrones up? That’s what “Content” as a King of the Advertising, The First (or second) of its name, the keeper of trends, and whatnots, does to us. It adds “context” to the “content” and thus makes it relevant and engaging. There’s a lot to talk about the empire that “Content The King” has built, which we could cover in the next topic.
