Advertising and Marketing during lockdown

by 3dots-blog April 16, 2020
Advertising and Marketing during lockdown

Like every other sector that drives employment and activity around the world, the advertising industry has been adversely affected during the lockdown. Whether it is print advertising or video ads, everything seems to have been scaled down lately to accommodate the highly necessary principles of social distancing. Governments across the globe are urging citizens to avoid social interaction by staying in their homes and this has basically killed the entire industry of massive ad shoots. But that does not mean that the creativity that is inherent to the advertising and marketing field has stopped. On the contrary, it has found a new medium of expression through user-generated videos, snapshots from individuals and innovative use of stock footage and images.

Asian Paints was quick to come up with an interesting take on the aspect of staying indoors with your loved ones. The ad was simply a compilation of the tender moments that we experience, shot at home in an amateur style on purpose, as opposed to the highly stylised and professional shoots. Other brands were quick to join the bandwagon, coming up with their own low budget, ‘home video’ style films that promoted not just the brand, but the importance of social distancing and personal safety through hygiene.

But there is another important scenario where all brands are focussing their advertising efforts on. And the scenario we are talking about is expressing gratitude to those who are fighting the Coronavirus epidemic at the frontlines – healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, sanitation & cleanliness workers, and beyond. Every brand worth its salt is engaged in creating some kind of communication which graciously thanks all these heroes for their brave efforts in keeping us safe. Brands are also urging everyone to follow government rules and regulations and doing their bit to maintain social order, effectively contributing to the better handling of the Coronavirus situation.

On the digital front, almost every brand is trying to engage its audiences through social media. Social media advertising is the only medium that is still accessible to the masses as hoardings and print ads prove useless in this unique time of crisis. As spending time at home becomes monotonous and confining, brands are trying to keep their customers occupied with contests, games and trivia-based quizzes.

These activities are a way for brands to prove that despite the difficult times, we are with you always. Pyramid Lifestyles, a leading real estate developer based out of Pune is also interacting with clients during the lockdown with interesting challenges that are given instant gratification & prizes. These contests are encouraging users to send in pictures and videos of their family time and togetherness during the period of quarantine. Needless to say, such endeavours and efforts are gaining a positive response from users, proving that advertising and marketing creativity will find its way even in the harshest of times.
