FIGHTING A VIRUS WITH CREATIVITY – Public Safety Announcements & Graphic Design

Coronavirus is becoming a serious threat not just for China but for the globe as well. As the number patients being detected across different countries increases every day, corporations as well as health organisations are turning towards innovative ways to convey the message of safe health practices through Public Safety Announcements. Advertising agencies and marketing companies are also stepping up to the task of educating the public regarding several do’s and don’ts.

But graphic design and Public Safety Announcements have a long history of raising awareness and saving lives. The striking propaganda art created by branding agencies and governments during both the World Wars has created a form of poster making that is now studied in art and graphic design schools today. These posters were primarily created to increase support for the war efforts, but they also used to warn the public about dangers of disease and contamination.

With the rise of the internet and digital marketing, public safety announcements have found new avenues of reaching out to target audiences. Social media platforms have become a powerful tool for influencing public opinion. Coronavirus, with its fast spread and fatal outcome created a panic amongst civilians and led to a lot of misinformation. This is where digital marketing agencies and online advertising agencies are stepping up to the task of making the public aware. A serious initiative was taken up by Johnson & Johnson, one of the world leaders in hygiene and wellness products, medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods. In addition to showcasing safety tips, they also donated masks among the masses. This act can be seen as a good example of corporate social responsibility. Not only does this help emphasise a positive brand image for the organisation, but also endears the brand to the masses.

Continuing their theme of quirky communication and humorous take on everything from daily groceries to global politics, Dunzo urged consumers to stay away from contamination by using puns on famous Bollywood songs and common Hindi phrases.
