Why Some Brands Own a Place in Our Minds

by 3dots-blog September 17, 2026

When someone says Volvo, what comes to mind? Safety.

Nike? Sport, performance, motivation.

IKEA? Affordable, functional, design-led living.

Amul? Dairy, familiarity and an unmistakably Indian voice.

You probably didn’t think about their entire product catalogue. You thought of one strong association. That is the power of brand positioning.

What Is Brand Positioning?

Brand positioning is the space your brand occupies in the minds of your customers. Good positioning doesn’t necessarily mean being completely different from everyone else. It means being distinctive, relevant and easy to remember.

Why Is Brand Positioning Important?

A clear brand positioning strategy can help you:

  • Create a distinctive identity
  • Make your brand easier to remember
  • Attract the right target audience
  • Differentiate yourself from competitors
  • Give your communication a clear direction
  • Build stronger customer associations
  • Create consistency across marketing channels

How to Create a Brand Positioning Strategy

There isn’t one formula that works for every business. But there are a few questions every brand should ask.

1. Understand Your Target Audience

Before deciding what your brand should stand for, understand who you’re trying to matter to.

  • Demographics
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Income

Understand their motivations, frustrations, priorities and buying behaviour. Your audience should be someone who has a reason to care about what makes your brand different.

2. Analyse Your Competitors

  • What are competing brands promising?
  • What language are they using?
  • What customer need are they owning?
  • What visual territory do they occupy?
  • Where are all the brands starting to sound alike?

A competitor analysis helps you identify white spaces—areas where your brand can establish a meaningful association.

3. Identify Your Brand’s Unique Value

What can our brand offer that is genuinely meaningful and defensible?

  • A unique product
  • A particular expertise
  • A specialised service
  • A distinctive experience
  • A particular customer segment
  • A different business model
  • A strong heritage
  • A compelling point of view

Your unique value must be relevant, credible and ownable.

4. Define Your Brand’s Position

A useful positioning statement can answer four questions:

  • Who is your audience?
  • What category are you in?
  • What value do you offer?
  • Why should people believe you?

5. Build Your Messaging Around the Position

Once your position is clear, your messaging becomes much easier. Strong positioning creates a thread connecting different campaigns, products and moments.

6. Make Your Position Visible Through Design

Positioning isn’t only about words. Your visual identity should support the same idea. Think about logo, colour palette, typography, packaging, website, social media and so on.

7. Communicate Your Position Consistently

This is where many brands lose momentum. They establish a position and then change direction every few months. Adaptation is important. But your core association should remain recognisable. Consistency means making sure different things still feel like they come from the same brand.

8. Test and Refine Your Positioning

Positioning isn’t something you write once and put into a presentation. You need to see how people respond to it. Customer interviews, surveys, social listening, campaign performance and sales data can all provide useful signals.

Common Brand Positioning Mistakes to Avoid

Trying to appeal to everyone- When your audience is “everyone,” your message often becomes relevant to no one in particular.

Copying competitors- Competitor research should reveal opportunities—not become a template for your brand.

Making vague promises- “Quality,” “innovation,” “trust” and “customer-centricity” can be valuable, but they’re not automatically differentiators.

Changing the position too often- Brands need evolution, but constant reinvention can make it difficult for customers to build a clear association.

Focusing only on visual identity- A new logo cannot fix unclear positioning. Design should express the strategy—not replace it.

Making a promise you can’t deliver- Your positioning must match the actual customer experience.

How Do You Know if Your Brand Positioning Is Working?

If customers consistently mention the associations you are trying to build, you’re moving in the right direction.

You can also look at:

  • Brand awareness
  • Brand recall
  • Customer perception
  • Search behaviour
  • Customer feedback
  • Repeat purchases
  • Campaign response
  • Competitive differentiation

Brand Positioning Strategy vs Brand Strategy

Brand strategy is the broader plan for building and growing the brand. It can include its purpose, values, audience, identity, personality, architecture, communication and long-term direction.

Brand positioning is more specific. It defines the distinctive place the brand wants to occupy in the customer’s mind relative to alternatives. When customers know what your brand stands for, who it is for and why it is different, every piece of communication becomes easier to create.
