TIMES BRAND LOGOS UNDERWENT A TEMPORARY CHANGE TO IMPACT CONSUMER SENTIMENTS

by 3dots-blog May 30, 2024

The logo is the face of your company. A strong logo not only reveals the company’s identity but also attracts new customers. This is why investing time in creating an attractive logo is crucial.

“Don’t touch the logo” is a common directive in many design briefs. However, in recent times, brands have been getting quirkier and bolder, with  temporary logo changes to promote social causes. to draw attention to various social causes and encourage collective action. Blinkit and Swiggy did it recently. Let’s look at more examples.

Lacoste

In February 2018, Lacoste made headlines by changing its iconic logo for the first time to raise awareness for endangered species. The project, led by BETC, replaced the brand’s famous crocodile emblem with 10 endangered animals on limited-edition polo shirts to raise awareness about the cause.

Partnering with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Lacoste produced one polo shirt for each remaining animal in the wild, totaling 1,775 shirts.

McDonald’s

For International Women’s Day 2018, McDonald’s flipped its iconic Golden Arches to form a ‘W’ for ‘women.’  A giant sign above a Lynwood, California branch was also flipped. While it garnered global publicity, the effort was criticised for not addressing underlying issues like living wages and zero-hour contracts.

Audi

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many brands including Coca-Cola and McDonald’s, altered their logos to promote social distancing. Jumping behind the wheel, Audi separated its four iconic intertwined circles and even revised its tagline to “Keep distance, Stay Together.”

Google

Google has been playing with its logo since its early days in 1998. This global giant has regularly updated its logo to celebrate notable events and even spark conversation for various causes.

Among its most memorable doodles is the pani puri doodle, featuring a street vendor and an interactive game for users that the brand made for its Indian audience in 2024. On May 4 this year, Google commemorated India’s first female wrestler, Banu, with a colourful doodle.

The Power of a Temporary Logo Change

Temporary logo changes can effectively reach a wider audience and serve as a powerful marketing strategy. However, bear in mind that it’s a double-edged sword. To  avoid backlash, these changes must be executed thoughtfully. Here are some tips for making a temporary switch:

  • Attach your redesign to a socially relevant movement
  • Highlight the cause, not just your brand
  • Blend changes seamlessly with the theme
  • Use symbols, colors, and texts aligned with the cause

Benefits of Temporary Logo Changes

  • Grabs attention quickly: A temporary change can make your brand stand out.
  • Positively impacts brand image: Aligning with social causes can enhance your reputation.
  • Creates emotional connections: Customers may feel more connected to a brand that supports causes they care about.

The Bottom Line

As a business owner or marketing expert, finding ways to positively highlight your brand is crucial. A temporary logo change can be the right step for creating a buzz that elevates your brand image and connects with your audience on a deeper level.
