Honey, I Shrunk The Content: Storytelling, in Shorts!

Unlike the titular movie (with the original title, of course) where the inventor shrunk his own kids and they had to find a way home from their own backyard, this article would be about shrunk content that would find its purpose in the world of advertising! Today’s world is all about short stories, short videos, reels, vlogs and whatnots. From the media and entertainment industry to sports, we have moved from a 4-hour long cringe-fest of a movie to short films, to a nail-biting, hair-pulling of a T20 Super Over. That’s the impact of short content today. How about we shrink ourselves and dive deep into the subject?

The History of Short Stories

The shortening of content didn’t start recently. Some of the short stories originated during ancient legends, folklore & fables and mythology. That’s how we started loving Arabian Nights and Panchatantra, didn’t we?

The popularity of short stories grew strong with print magazines and journals gradually piggybacking on its success. This was all in print. What about digital?

In 2012, (when it was predicted that the world was supposedly coming to an end) there emerged a new phenomenon – Vines. Short videos changed the whole landscape of digital marketing and the internet as we know it. Within a short span of time (see what we did there?) Twitter acquired Vine for $30 million reportedly and reformed it as Intermedia Labs.

Video Marketing soon became a thing and the advertising world pounced on the opportunity. Today, even the simplest of the website has a video to explain their products or services.

Soon after Vine set the foundation for short videos, other social media platforms came up with their own versions in the form of reels, snap stories, short videos and so on.

Today, marketers prefer video content because distributing content and increasing engagement with consumers, rank above everything else.

The future of Video Marketing is certainly bright and portrays tremendous potential. Here are a few prospective platforms where videos can prove to be your way out of the mundane.

Going LIVE: The online live streaming fever has taken the world by storm and this is growing popular every day with new ways across all industries.

Shoot Vertically & Horizontally: Have you ever felt livid when people recorded a video vertically? Gone are the days when we shot films in cinemascope. Today, responsive content is getting more traction and 1:1 is the in-thing.

Going Panoramic: 360-degree videos have become popular amongst the automobile and the real estate industry predominantly as the interaction and engagement with the customers adds more depth, quite literally.

Virtually Real: Virtual Reality has picked up momentum but the technology still hasn’t been utilized to its fullest potential. This is how marketers can provide an immersive experience to their customers. The applications are across all industries but used only by a few.

OTT-friendly: Most of the video content, short or long, is moving to OTT platforms because that’s where the world is, right now.

Influencers’ Bread & Butter: People who have chosen an alternative, unorthodox career of being a social media influencer, depend on video content for training, sharing experiences, reviews and so on. This is how they earn their living.
